5 Sustainable Wardrobe Staples for Winter

The word ‘sustainability’ has been circulating a lot over the last few months, and the movement towards a more sustainable, eco-friendly life has been building momentum.

There’s no denying our planet is in trouble, and that’s largely down to our own doing. Animals are suffering, our ice caps are melting, marine life is enduring the runt of our plastic waste that we improperly dispose of, and forests are being destroyed. It’s time we take responsibility and try to do our bit to help.

My eyes were opened when I was interviewed by Stacey Dooley in the BBC documentary ‘Fashion’s Dirty Secrets’, and I am taking steps towards a more sustainable, eco-friendly lifestyle. I am excited for the journey ahead, and I’m easing myself into it slowly (there’s a lot to learn!).

Fashion is one of the biggest polluters in the world. A combination of the use of harmful and toxic  substances, a lack of recycling of clothing, and the constant churning out of new clothes has had an unbelievably negative impact on the environment.

In my efforts to find more sustainable clothing, I have discovered some incredible brands that are doing their bit to help the environment. Every item from my whole outfit below is sustainable and ethical in some form.

I visited Aida in Shoreditch, a store that includes brands that have a strong philosophy and inspiring ethics. I found this beautiful coat made from 50% recycled wool from a brand called Selected Femme. I also found a classic white jumper from Cossac, which is made ethically in their factory using organic cotton.

The jeans are from Iden Denim, made from entirely from recycled and organic fibres to minimise water waste.

Next, I visited 69b Boutique in Broadway Market, a store that is committed to only working with brands that are socially and environmentally responsible. I found this gorgeous crossbody bag from Matt and Nat, and also these boots from Toms, where for every pair of shoes bought, Toms will give back to someone in need.
